Description

Andy Warhol’s explosive Pop Art and sharp commentary on advertising and celebrity culture are renowned and deeply relevant even decades after their creation. Though Warhol himself could be a polarizing figure both personally and professionally, there is no doubt that he was a pioneer of the Pop movement, and today, as a result, his works regularly fetch astronomical prices. In this evocative addition to Assouline’s Ultimate Collection, Warhol expert and former Andy Warhol Museum director Eric Shiner curates the 100 quintessential, unique works that define the evolution of this illustrious artist, tracing Warhol’s dynamic career from the late forties to the end of the eighties and creating a stunning compendium whose pieces, due to their rarity, value, and prestige as part of a museum or other collection, could simply never all be acquired by a single collector. Casual art lovers know Campbell’s Soup Cans and the Marilyn Diptych, but Andy Warhol: The Impossible Collection goes deeper, revealing and revisiting some less ubiquitous yet equally powerful pieces, spanning paintings, prints, sculpture, films, and photography, from Warhol’s astonishing oeuvre.

Eric Shiner is the senior vice president of contemporary art at Sotheby’s. Prior to this, he was the director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2016 and was the museum’s Milton Fine Curator of Art from 2008 to 2010. A leading scholar on Andy Warhol and Asian contemporary art, he lived and worked in Japan for a total of six years and was assistant curator of the inaugural Yokohama Triennale in 2001. Shiner has curated dozens of contemporary art exhibitions in cities around the globe and was the team leader on the Warhol Museum’s major Warhol retrospective, which traveled to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo between 2012 and 2014. Notable exhibitions include Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei in 2015/16, Deborah Kass: Before and Happily Ever After in 2012, and Armory Focus: USA at the Armory Show in 2013.

Since its beginnings in 1994, Assouline has been dedicated to creating books that are as informational as they are beautiful works of art. The respect for the product and the process of creation is evident in every facet – the traditional technique of hand-binding covers, the imagery that transports the reader to another place and time, the luxurious thickness of each page. The passion and the attention to detail are like that of an haute couture atelier.

Known worldwide for bringing luxury to the publishing industry, Assouline produces one-of-a-kind books on fashion, art, architecture, photography, design, and travel, weaving a story of L’Art de Vivre with every publication. The Ultimate Collection is the epitome of the Assouline brand as it offers an unparalleled standard of excellence in the 21st century. Each book from the collection pays homage to the time-honored craft of bookbinding and pictures are individually hand-tipped, a process which requires cutting, gluing, and placing each photo onto the page. This level of craftsmanship yields the highest quality books in the world, truly pieces of art in their own right.
